Reducing Social Media: Why It Matters & Where to Stay Connected with Vintage Virtues

Lately, I’ve been reflecting on my time spent blogging and on social media. A recent poll in our community revealed something surprising—most people don’t read the Bible because of social media distractions, followed closely by being too busy. That statistic startled and saddened me because I have a role in it.

I understand the struggle. Between reading and studying the Bible, homeschooling, homemaking, homesteading (especially as spring gets busier), and serving my family and community, I often feel overwhelmed too. It’s easy to get caught up scrolling—keeping up with family, friends, and world events—yet social media is quietly stealing precious time.

A Shift in Focus

When I first started Vintage Virtues, I committed to quality over quantity. But over time, I’ve noticed something troubling:

  • The less meaningful, more divisive content is what gains traction.
  • Posts on homesteading, homemaking, and homeschooling—our core topics—are buried.
  • Bible studies and faith-based articles see little engagement.
  • Social media algorithms thrive on controversy and demand constant content to keep users glued.

The reality is, I have little control over what the algorithm pushes forward. I’ve also felt the pressure of the platform’s dashboard checklist—x number of reels, x number of posts, x number of comments—all designed to keep content creators feeding the system while consumers stay locked in.

The demands of social media have made it harder to stay focused on that mission. Instead of meaningful engagement, much of my time has been spent policing comments, shutting down divisive debates, and adapting content to fit ever-changing platform requirements. As a result, Meta has squashed my reach. What started as a way to encourage and uplift has increasingly become a part-time job of creating free content for platforms that profit off distraction and polarizing division.

This is not the direction I want to go. The heart of Vintage Virtues is to turn eyes back to Christ in all we do, living biblically in a modern world. It’s about promoting traditional values—or as I call them, Vintage Virtues—which may seem old-fashioned but are deeply rooted in Scripture. This platform exists to encourage fellow homemakers, homesteaders, and homeschoolers as we seek to glorify the Lord in every aspect of our lives.

What This Means Going Forward

After much prayer, I’ve decided to eliminate Vintage Virtues TikTok and Instagram accounts. These platforms drive little traffic to the deeper, more meaningful content I create. More importantly, they contribute to the distraction culture that keeps people from spending time in the Word.

I’m also reducing Facebook content and have removed social media apps from my phone. Moving forward:

  • I will only post and respond when on my computer.
  • Most of my effort will be directed toward the blog and newsletter at vintage-virtues.com.
  • If you want to stay connected, please sign up for the newsletter—this will be the best way to receive updates, encouragement, and in-depth content.
  • You can also continue engaging on Facebook through the Vintage Virtues page and Biblical Roots group, though at a slower pace.

Why This Matters

At the heart of this decision is a desire to be a good steward of my time and calling. I never wanted to be a “quick photo with a caption” content creator—I want to create meaningful, biblically rooted content that encourages and equips.

If you’ve been feeling the same pull away from social media distractions, I encourage you to pray about it, set boundaries, and refocus on what truly matters.

I ask those who will, to join me in prayer over this change, that we all may steward our time wisely. I’ll leave you with this encouragement:

“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice! Let your gentle spirit be known to all men. The Lord is near. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you. ”
