Captivating Children’s Book Alert! 📚 “The King Who Found His Self-Control” by Costi and Christyne Hinn delivers a profound message: “Wisdom calling out to the King to guide him to the core issue – the need for a new heart, achievable only through confession, repentance, and transformation through Christ.” A must-read for all ages!

Synopsis
“The King Who Found His Self-Control” by Costi and Christyne Hinn presents the captivating tale of King Ira, leader of the City of Thad. Despite his esteemed position, King Ira grapples with a major flaw – a lack of self-control. This weakness results in a major crisis for his city. As events unfold, the narrative explores whether an encounter with Lady Wisdom can offer a solution to this pressing dilemma.
Key Points
The book revolves around key themes of self-control (a fruit of the spirit), personified wisdom, and detailed imagery. It serves as a parable illustrating the King’s lack of self-control, with wisdom calling out to him and guiding him to the core issue – the need for a new heart, achievable only through confession, repentance, and transformation through Christ. Additionally, it highlights the real consequences of impulsive actions. The narrative offers a layered story that captivates both parents and children, and includes a guided discussion section at the end for parents to explore with their children.
Critical Analysis
The storyline is impactful and well-executed, with the artist’s illustrations bringing life into the story. The personification of wisdom as an actual woman character in the book is intriguing. Initially, it seemed odd to see wisdom portrayed as a woman, but considering that scripture also personifies wisdom as a woman calling out in Proverbs 1:20–33 and Proverbs 8:1—9:12, it integrated well into the storyline. Understanding the parallel took me a moment, especially since she was depicted as an Advisor to the King. It caused me to ponder on the role of the woman as Advisor, instead of the Holy Spirit. It seems like there may have been room to expand on this in the storyline. However, wisdom does reveal the crux of the issue which leads the King to Jesus.
Personal Reflection
I thoroughly enjoyed the profound and meaningful message conveyed in this concise, engaging children’s book. The delightful poetic style, reminiscent of Dr. Seuss’s work, adds a playful quality that makes the book accessible, while the layered parable-style message imparts a deeper insight, prompting contemplation. The depiction of the characters with a Middle Eastern aesthetic by the illustrator Brad Smith was captivating, particularly the portrayal of Jesus seated on the throne enveloped in light, with his back turned towards the audience. Upon seeing the illustration, I remarked to my son, “Oh, look, it’s God seated on His Throne.” He observed it intently and responded, “It’s Jesus, see the nail mark in his hand.” This moment left a powerful impact. I appreciated that the artist chose not to depict the face or a clear figure of Jesus. Reading this story with my almost 10-year-old son was a thought-provoking experience. He took his time to explore the pages, engage in discussions about the message, and admire the artwork. I, too, found myself reflecting on my own struggles with self-control. This book serves as a catalyst for non-threatening, reflective conversations, facilitating open communication on this topic. Overall, it provided valuable support in addressing this subject.
Recommendation
Yes, I recommend this book without hesitation for all ages. Although the book shows that it is written for ages 4-8, it truly serves more than this limited range.
Final Thoughts
The beautiful artwork and profound, layered message make this book one worth keeping and reading to future generations. I look forward to reading it with my grandchild one day. I also look forward to additional books in this series, as there’s much that can be added to it with the various fruits of the spirit. It’s a well-done book.

This book impressively weaves together captivating storytelling, thought-provoking themes, and engaging artwork, making it impactful for readers of all ages.
