Children are constantly learning and exploring the world around them through engaging challenges in academia and exciting experiences. Gaming is one such exciting experience that can be used to approach learning. With a wide array of educational games available today, children can enhance their knowledge while having fun. Let’s dive into our top 10 picks.
We decluttered our homeschool room games. In our homeschool room, we have separate storage areas for educational games and family games. After going through them, we decided to let go of a whole box of games while reminiscing on cherished memories and our favorite ones. However, the following 10 games definitely made the cut as they are both entertaining and educational, making them perfect for the whole family.

Build Your Brain with Cranium! Cranium is an all-time classic. This has long been one of our family favorites to play with guests, or family game night. Teams work together to perform various activities from word worm to data head, to creative cat, and star performer.
We also love the Cranium Bible edition. It contains all of the same fun elements as the original cranium game but gives rise to a new challenge, as team of players compete to recall Bible facts, create biblical scenes, and perform Christian songs.

The “Opolies”: There are a plethora of different versions of the classic game Monopoly. A quick visit to the Monopoly store will surely elicit a feeling of Nostalgia. Among the numerous editions, my personal favorite remains the timeless monopoly version. As a child, I distinctly remember coming across Monopoly and mistakenly pronouncing it as “Mono Poli”. This game offers valuable lessons about banking, real estate, and the art of buying, trading, and selling. It also serves as a great opportunity to discuss economic concepts, the market, and even the spirit of entrepreneurship. I wonder if the enduring appeal of Monopoly has fueled the interest in real estate, leading to the rise of Airbnb hosts, landlords, and commercial property owners.
Bibleopoly is a unique version of the popular game Monopoly that promotes cooperation instead of just accumulating wealth. The game introduces players to the biblical cities, and the objective is to be the first player to build a church in one of these cities. What sets Bibleopoly apart is its emphasis on character building and instilling virtues, which is especially important in a society that often prioritizes material success over moral values. If you’re looking for a wholesome and educational game for your family, Bibleopoly is an excellent choice.

Scrabble is an exceptional classic game. It is a crossword game that tests players’ ability to create words using the limited tiles they have. This game provides a wonderful opportunity to enhance children’s vocabulary, introduce new words, and aid in the comprehension of word meanings. I recently came across the 1949 Retro Edition of Scrabble and instantly fell in love with it!

Scavenger Hunt Adventure by Anker Play Products. In this game, players spin the wheel and draw a card to find out what combination of an object they have to find. Player’s spin and draw for combinations like an “old can” or “green leaf”. The first to find the object and race it back, before the minute glass time runs out, wins that pick. We play for multiple rounds, say 10 picks, and the one who reaches the most finds, wins. It’s an exciting and fast-paced thrilling game. It challenges the kids to think quick, race to compete, and learn using their whole body and mind. It also takes us indoors and outdoors.
Ok, so this one was a $2.50 Five Below Store find. It’s no longer in stock. I can’t find it on Amazon and resellers have it listed on Ebay and Poshmark for $15-20. The lesson here: don’t underestimate the power of finding a great buy at dollar stores! Can’t find it for yourself? No fear, you can recreate this game at home with minor materials such as a handmade spinner, index cards, a minute timer, and imagination!

Experience the Educational Journey of Oregon Trail! As a history enthusiast, I highly recommend Oregon Trail to all fellow history lovers out there. I fondly remember playing this game on the classroom computers during my elementary school days. So, when my son started learning about early America in the 2nd grade, I immediately knew I had to introduce him to the wonders of Oregon Trail. The PC CD-ROM game version can be found here. However, our family’s favorite version is the Oregon Trail card game as it seamlessly combines entertainment with education. This captivating game provides an exceptional opportunity for players to embark on the challenging journey of early pioneers while gaining insights into the historical context, strategic decision-making, and resource management required to survive the trail.

Apples to Apples is an exciting game of comparisons. Each player receives a handful of cards with words. One player lays down a card from the draw pile, and every other player must lay down one of their own word cards as a word association. The player then picks the best word association. This is a fantastic word game that helps children learn about word definitions, word associations, and context. While searching for this game online, I was pleasantly surprised to find that there’s also an Apples-to-Apples Bible Edition. As we recently got rid of a whole box of games, I plan on adding this new version to our revised game collection.

CloverLeap is an Educational-Language Arts Game, designed for children in 1st and 2nd grade. Despite my son being in 4th grade now, he still finds this game engaging. A roll of the dice determines whether you move your sheep or collect a clover tile. By utilizing the words on the collected tiles, you can create whimsical sentences, including arrays of nouns, verbs, and adjectives, which in turn earn you points. This game effectively enhances language skills and aids in the development of vocabulary and sentence structure.

In Owl Solve That! team up with the detectives from the Owl Solve That! Agency to find the answers. Players earn one point for each number card they use. By utilizing addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, each player creates equations that match a solution card in their hand. Don’t miss out on this month’s sale and be sure to check out all of the October Sales as well!

I’m also excited to add this new Social Studies game by Simply Fun! Time Jumpers. Players travel back in time to witness some of the greatest achievements, discoveries, and events of the 20th century.
There is so much value in board games. They’re entertaining, educational, and great for bringing family and friends together. I’m excited to have these games organized and ready for our next gaming adventure. Moreover, I’m delighted to have found new additions to my collection: the 1949 Edition of Scrabble, The Bible Edition of Apples to Apples, and Time Jumpers by Simply Fun!
