Call me a coffee lover! I love a good cup of coffee. A Hazelnut Latte, in particular, is my favorite. However, I don’t love all of the yucky ingredients in store-bought creamers and syrups. I recently bought some organic Hazelnut extract from Azure Standard to replace my storebought creamers and hazelnut coffee syrup, from the grocery store. Check out the step-by-step video of me creating a Hazelnut Latte for one using 1/4 of the recipe for the Hazelnut Coffee Creamer, warmed and frothed in the Nespresso Aeroccino Milk Frother, poured over sweetened black coffee.  You do not need any special equipment to make the coffee creamer or the syrup. I just love warmed, frothed milk for a coffeehouse experience at home! As it turns out, flavored coffee creamers and syrup are easy to make. The recipes for the healthy homemade coffee creamer and the simple syrup are both listed below the video. Enjoy!

Why Homemade Hazelnut Coffee Creamer and Syrup?

While Store-bought coffee creamers and flavored syrups are convenient, they are often laden with chemicals, preservatives, artificial colors, and flavors. Some common ingredients found in these products include:

  • Caramel Color
  • Sodium Benzoate
  • Potassium Sorbate
  • Polysorbate 80
  • Artificial flavors
  • Artificial sweetener

Given the potential health concerns associated with these additives, many people are turning to natural alternatives or making their own homemade creamer and syrups. If you’re looking to avoid these synthetic ingredients, consider exploring recipes that use natural flavorings and sweeteners for a healthier alternative.

Below is a step-by-step video for creating a latte with the Hazelnut Coffee Creamer recipe. Then just below the video are two easy recipes that are healthier and taste great in coffees, lattes, cappuccinos, and more.

Homemade Hazelnut Coffee Creamer Recipe

Make your own homemade coffee creamer with this simple recipe, which contains 3 simple ingredients and will store safely for up to 2 weeks in the refrigerator. There are different options available to make this recipe vegan, or dairy-free.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of heavy cream or half-and-half (alternative dairy-free option may include barista oat milk, almond milk, rice milk, or even canned coconut milk).
  • 1 teaspoon of hazelnut extract (I really like Flavorganics Extract from Azure Standard).
  • 2-4 tablespoons of sweetener (I really like Brown Coconut Sugar, from Thrive Market); alternative natural sweeteners options include maple syrup, honey, or raw cane sugar.

Optional Flavor Twist: Add 1-2 tablespoons of cocoa powder for a hazelnut mocha creamer.

Instructions:

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the heavy cream or half-and-half with the hazelnut extract. Stir well to ensure the extract is evenly distributed.
  2. Gradually add the sweetener to achieve your desired level of sweetness.

If you’re making a hazelnut mocha creamer, now’s the time to add the cocoa powder. Stir until the cocoa powder is fully incorporated.
  3. Transfer the mixture into a clean, airtight container, such as a mason jar or a bottle with a tight lid.
  4. Shake the container vigorously to ensure all the ingredients are well combined.
  5. Store the hazelnut coffee creamer in the refrigerator for up to 1-2 weeks. Be sure to shake well before each use, as some separation may occur.

Hazelnut Simple Syrup

This homemade, simple syrup recipe contains only three simple ingredients and will store safely for up to three weeks in the refrigerator. You can use this homemade hazelnut syrup to sweeten and flavor your coffee, lattes, cappuccinos, and other beverages. Just add a tablespoon or two to your drink, depending on how sweet and flavorful you like it. Enjoy your delicious hazelnut-flavored coffee!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 cup of granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of hazelnut extract
  • Optional: a pinch of salt to enhance flavor

Instructions:

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine the water and granulated sugar.
  2. Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the sugar completely dissolves. This usually takes 3-5 minutes.
  3. Once the sugar has dissolved, reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer gently for an additional 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Remove the saucepan from the heat and allow the syrup to cool slightly.
  5. Stir in the hazelnut extract and the optional pinch of salt. Adjust the amount of hazelnut extract to your taste preference. If you want a stronger hazelnut flavor, you can add more extract, but be cautious not to overpower the syrup.
  6. Let the syrup cool completely before transferring it to a clean, airtight container, such as a glass bottle or jar.
  7. Store the hazelnut syrup in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 weeks.

Customizable Coffee Creations and Flavor Options

Either of these recipes is easily customizable. You can create different flavor variations of your own coffee creamer and simple syrup by simply switching out the hazelnut extract for different flavors of extract. Some great extracts to consider are vanilla, almond, or coconut. Even a combination such as almond and coconut, with the addition of cocoa powder, would make a lovely Almond Joy, flavored latte! Not a coffee drinker? Try these flavors in a cup of hot cocoa instead of coffee! Homemade healthy coffee creamers and syrups are easy to make and customize for your own coffeehouse experience at home. So, what are you waiting for? Become your own barista!
