“But as for you, take wheat, barley, beans, lentils, millet and spelt, put them in one vessel and make them into bread for yourself; you shall eat it according to the number of the days that you lie on your side, three hundred and ninety days.
Ezekial 4:9 NASB95
I’ve used ingredients straight from the Bible to create a recipe for a moist and hearty bread, similar to artisan or beer bread. It’s fibrous and filling, packed with micronutrients. Check out the recipe and some handy tips and links below. I’ve even included a video demonstrating how to make Ezekiel bread. I’ve opted for a Cuisinart BreadMaker for simplicity, but you can also make this bread manually. If you give it a try, let me know. And if you have a variation you love, share it in the comments. Enjoy!
Hearty Ezekiel 4:9 Bread Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1 1/2 cups warm water
- 1/2 cup cooked beans
- 1/4 cup cooked lentils
- 1 cup wheat flour
- 1 cup barley flour
- 1 cup spelt flour
- 1/2 cup millet flour
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
Instructions:
- If raw beans are prepared, rinse them and cover them with water. Let them soak for at least 8 hours or overnight.
- To cook beans, bring a pot of water to a boil and add the soaked beans. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and let them simmer for about 1.5 hours or until tender. Drain well. If using canned beans, rinse and drain.
- For lentils, bring a pot of water to a boil and add the soaked lentils. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and let them simmer for 20 minutes or until tender. Drain well.
- In a separate bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water and let it sit for 5 minutes. Then add 2 tablespoons of honey to the mixture.
- In a Cuisinart Breadmaker, combine wheat flour, barley flour, spelt flour, and millet flour.
- Add the cooked beans, lentils, olive oil, and salt to the Breadmaker.
- Pour the yeast mixture over the ingredients in the breadmaker.
- To cook the loaf in the Cuisinart Breadmaker, set the machine to the whole wheat cycle and start it. If not, use only the dough cycle, remove the dough, and cook the dough in a loaf pan at 350 degrees for approximately 50 minutes.
- Once the bread is done, let it cool before slicing.
Tips and Helpful Links: When making this nutritious Ezekiel 4:9 bread, I found that using cooked beans and lentils ensured a moist texture. On the other hand, milling raw beans and lentils into flours produced a drier result. I personally used a KitchenAid Mixer along with the Grain Mill Attachment to grind the grains into flour. While I had some trouble finding Millet Flour, thankfully I found Millet on Amazon. Most of the remaining ingredients, including spelt flour, were sourced from Thrive Market. If you’d like to save $40 on your next order with Thrive, you can use this link. Finally, I am also a fan of Azure Standard, a co-operative for purchasing organic ingredients in bulk. Additionally, I chose to use a Cuisinart Bread Maker to handle all of the mixing, kneading, and dough rising. The machine can even bake the bread, but personally, I prefer to finish the process in the oven. I’ve included links to the products I used for your convenience. Happy baking and enjoy your nutritious Ezekiel 4:9 bread!
