Dear friend,
Between the threat of Hurricane Idalia and the extended Labor Day, we’ve found ourselves with leisure time on our hands. My daughter, Braelyn, is talented at crochet, so I asked her to teach me. As it turns out, she’s a better teacher than I am a learner in the world of crochet.

She learned to crochet by watching YouTube videos. Crochet Hat for Cats and Dogs | Crochet Tutorial is the first video she watched. She used a thicker yarn than what was called for in the video, but her final product turned out purrrfect! Although this is the first project she completed, it’s not the best for beginners. It’s best for beginners to start with squares or rectangles. So that’s where we started. It’s also highly recommended that you invest in ergonomic hooks. The plastic ones break easily and can leave your fingers blistered.
First, she taught me how to make a chain, the foundation of the square or rectangle. The plan was to make a scarf, but I quickly and repeatedly got tangled up. She untangled my mess a few times and patiently helped me start over from the point where I went wrong until finally, I made a rectangle.

It took me about an hour too long to get this far. I set out to make a scarf but settled for a mason jar wrap. It perfectly transformed my mason jar into a lovely vase for my daughter’s beautiful, crocheted flowers that she made as my Mother’s Day present this past summer.

Below are some of her more elaborate creations, as well as her favorite YouTube tutorials. I hope that these videos will help you learn to crochet or improve your skills.
Sincerely,
A Work in Progress @Vintage-Virtues
