Tradwives

Tradwives, short for traditional wives, is a newly coined, trending term, used to describe women reminiscent of the 1950’s housewives.

According to a Fox News article about the trending Tradwives, “Many [people have] questioned the tradwife philosophy and why any sentient being would adhere to it,” said Deborah Etienne, a content specialist from Boston. Many others [have] deemed the trend alarming, frightening, creepy, a too-good-to-be-true alternative to life, a way to cheat your way out of hard work, a form of anti-worker activity similar to union busting and a ‘White supremacy’ concept”.

To answer the question, “Why any sentiment being would adhere to it?” I tried being the always-on, student, employee, mom, and wife. My family often times took the backburner to my pursuit of education and career. Now that I’m a homemaker again, I see so much value in what I offer. The level of education my kids are receiving is elevated, I’m able to offer my family and God un-hurried quality time, we enjoy nice healthy meals together, and we collectively have more time for hobbies. This is in stark contrast to our family life before. None of this is meant to be a slap in the face to working moms. I know we’re all trying our hardest. I just find it disheartening that homemakers are so lowly valued by society.

I knew I was making a countercultural decision when I decided to step out of the workforce, with my freshly earned MBA, and into the home to exclusively care for my family. I never considered, the decision would be counted as radical or controversial. It sure isn’t a “too-good-to-be-true” or “way to cheat yourself out of a hard-work” lifestyle. It’s definitely not anti-worker, especially on the days I’m teaching lessons, washing tons of dishes (everyday), or knee-deep in cleaning up after kids and animals (most days). I definitely struggle to see the correlation to white supremacy, as I also know homemakers that are black and brown.

Well, here I am bucking the system with all of my church attendance, respecting & supporting my husband, raising children & chickens, gardening, baking, putting meals on the table, and housecleaning. Where are all my ladies at? Drop a comment about your radical lifestyle as a homemaker.
